Sentinel Node Biopsy

Sentinel Node Biopsy

Normally , if you do a mastectomy or a breast conservation surgery.,you have to do an axillary dissection and remove all the lymph nodes (about 30 -40 in number)in axilla to clear any possible spread of cancer in this region. The side effect of this morbid surgery is that patient lands up with disturbing arm edema in 10- 15% of cases. At times it is so incapacitating that the patient cannot do his routine day to day activities. Sentinel lymph node is the first node which drains the tumor. IF cancer is prsent in this node then there are more chances that cancer could have spread to other nodes in axilla. If cancer is not spread in this sentinel node then the chances of cancer spreading to other nodes is less than a percent. This technique uses combination of special dyes and high end gamma cameras and identifies the sentinel node. The node is submitted to immediate histopathological study by an advanced technique called frozen section and we can find whether cancer is spread to that particular node.At MIOT, we have state of art technology and expertise for the same.
