Larynx(Windpipe) Cancer

Tobacco smoking and alcohol are most important causes for this cancer

Clinical Features
  • Pain
  • Hoarseness of voice
  • Swelling on both sides of neck
  • Severe difficulty in breathing in advanced stages
Evaluation
  • Laryngoscopy and biopsy
  • CT scan of neck
Stage of disease
  • Very early stage – involves a small area of larynx and superficial
  • Early stage- involves larger area with impaired mobility of vocal cords
  • Advanced stage – Involves much larger area of larynx with extension to surrounding structures
  • Very advanced stage – invasion of cancer into major arteries of neck or spread to pther organs like luns,liver
Stage of disease
  • Very early stage- Endoscopic removal or laser in selected cases
  • Early stage – Radiation therapy
  • Advanced stage -surgery and patient has a permanent tracheostomy
  • Very advanced stage – Only chemotherapy, in some cases radiation therapy
